Critical Care Department

The Critical Care Department at Anderson’s Hospital, referred to as the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), is a specialized medical facility within the hospital designed to provide intensive, round-the-clock care for patients with life-threatening medical conditions or those who require close monitoring and specialized treatment. The critical care unit is composed of five high-acuity fully equipped beds, including one isolation area for contagious diseases, in addition to flexible and expandable units as the five beds in the observation unit and seven beds in the emergency unit. These units are staffed by highly trained medical professionals and equipped with advanced medical technology and mechanical ventilators to ensure the best possible care for critically ill patients.

Key components and functions of our Critical Care Department include:

1. Specialized Care: Critical care unit is designed to care for patients with severe and complex medical conditions, including those who have undergone major surgeries, experienced trauma or are dealing with serious medical issues such as respiratory failure, heart failure, sepsis or neurological crises.

2. Monitoring: Patients in the ICU are continuously monitored with advanced equipment that tracks vital signs, oxygen levels and other critical parameters. This enables immediate response to any deterioration in a patient's condition.

3. Expert Medical Team: Our ICU is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including intensivists (critical care specialists), critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and others. These professionals are specially trained in managing critically ill patients.

4. Ventilator Support: ICU patients with respiratory failure may require mechanical ventilation to support their breathing. The ICU is equipped with ventilators and specialized respiratory equipment. In addition, non-invasive support can be provided by multiple BiPAP machines for the medical best of the patients. All beds are equipped by double sources for medical gases (Oxygen and Compressed Air) and Vacuum outlets.

5. Invasive Procedures: Our Critical care staff is capable of performing invasive procedures, such as inserting central lines, arterial lines and monitoring devices to access and manage a patient's circulatory system.

6. Specialized Equipment: The ICU is equipped with advanced medical technology, including cardiac monitors, ventilators, dialysis machines, syringe pumps, infusion pumps and specialized imaging equipment.

7. Anderson’s Hospital ICU staff and Dietitian provides specialized nutrition and feeding support to critically ill patients, which may involve enteral (feeding through a tube) or parenteral (intravenous) nutrition.

8. Family Support: Anderson’s Hospital critical care team provides support and information to the families of patients, as patients in the ICU are often unable to communicate and may require complex decision-making. A dedicated room for family meetings is available for that purpose.

The Critical Care Department plays a vital role at Anderson’s Hospital by providing intensive care to patients with critical illnesses or those recovering from major surgeries. Its primary goal is to stabilize and improve the condition of patients with the aim of transitioning them to a less intensive level of care when they are stable enough to do so, with the support of a well trained staff and high-end equipment.
